It is an herbaceous plant, has lanceolate leaves and small white flowers with a red crown. Kalmegh contains some special secondary plant substances such as diterpenes, flavonoids and xanthones.
In Nepali, its name is “King of Bitters” because the plant has bitter properties while harmoniously balancing all other flavors. Traditionally, the leaves and stems are used, but also the root.
